One of the advantages of using pole building construction is the thick wall cavity provided by pole building construction. When a customer chooses to finish off the inside of their pole building, we will often install horizontal girts on the interior of the pole. This creates a 9" wall cavity that can be insulated with up to R-30 of spray-in foam. A second energy advantage is a reduction in thermal bridging. An average 8'x8' stud frame wall framed 16" on center has 1,264.5 sq inches of thermal bridging area (wall area that has a direct connection to the outside). In the same 8'x8' wall with post frame construction we can get that number down to as low as 50 s q inches**using fire foam for smoke barrier. 85 sq inches if the fire marshal requires wood smoke barrier.
